Never too late, never too far away
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3
This little verse is a prophetic promise for every wanderer that reaches the end of the rope. When my bad choices, addictions or misguided beliefs prove hollow and empty and I am without hope, God will be there to receive me, to restore my soul and set me on the right path.
The writer of the Psalm, David, was King, but selfish choices, well within his authority, but far removed from the heart of the shepherd boy that God anointed years prior, led him to do things the younger version of himself would have never considered. Namely, commit adultery and give an order he knew would lead to the woman’s husbands death. I’m not sure I could forgive a guy like that, especially if she’d been my sister or daughter – or wife.
A while later the king came to his senses and turned back to God and God restored him, restored his soul. In the Greek version it says “He has converted my soul.” When David repented from his sin, God met him there and converted him. Converted means changed. God changed Davids heart from stone to flesh; changed his path from destruction to righteousness.
He will do the same for the wanderer in your life. He will do the same for you.
Why? “For His name’s sake.” And who is this One that changes the sinners heart? His name is Jesus, and He is Savior. What He did for David and what He does for every wanderer who turns to Him is in keeping with who He is and what He does. He is Savior, and the Savior saves. “And you shall call his name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21.
